Artist's Statement
My work is about the sheer enjoyment of paint and the process in
which it can be channelled to create harmonies of colour, rhythm
and expression which evolve from personal narratives. For me, painting
is not all about the finished product; it is about the passion and
energy that goes into a piece of work and the process in which it
is created.
In this way I am particularly inspired by ‘Magical Realist’
writers such as Garcia Marquez, Franz Kafka, William Burrows and
Salman Rushdie and filmmakers such as Burton, Mendez and Kubrick
with the latter being the most prominent. I love the way Kubrick’s
films are predominantly unscripted allowing the actors to go on
their own investigative journey into the character. In a similar
way, my pieces are the physical result of my own investigative journey;
when I start to paint I never really know where it’s going
to lead me, I just sort of feel my way until the painting starts
to speak to me. From this I aim to allow the viewer to perhaps share
my exploration and observe fragments of the narrative, but simultaneously
let them create their own investigative journey into the painting
and therefore have a unique and individual relationship with each
piece.
